Their Mission
Delivering mouthwatering grits, that include fresh ingredients and flavors infused with California flare and Southern wholesomeness. Guaranteed to have your taste buds buzzing and your belly full.
How It All Began
Maya Lockett and Randa Powell, are two friends who decided to combine their passion for food and cooking. With their love for comfort food, the friends decided to create grits with an wow factor. This wow factor came from Maya's time living in the south and experiencing grits in a unique and soulful way. These southern grits were complex, delicious, and completely different than what she's experienced with grits in the Bay Area. After returning home from living in Atlanta, Maya shared with Randa, her interpretation of southern stacked grits which was like no other. Amazed and delighted by the flavor and freshness of ingredients not usually experienced in grits, Randa expressed this is a dish that should be shared with the world. Randa came up with name Nitty Gritty and they started their journey from there. They have made layered grit bowl creations that they want others to indulge in. These grit bowls undoubtedly speak to the foodie in everyone who eats them. Nitty Gritty is committed to merging the soul of southern cuisine with a savory fusion of healthy California produce to bring a remix and undeniable goodness to grits. A new twist for breakfast or as a meal at anytime of the day or for any occasion.
What Motivates Their Mission:
Being from Oakland isn't just about where we are from, but its about preserving our culture and community. Maya and Randa have both been active community service providers. Working directly with youth in Oakland to help them realize their potential and strive for success. Civic engagement, community service, and youth development is ultimately what brought these friends together, and is a driving force in their entrepreneurialism, and invention of culinary genius.
Many Californians like us, have roots in the South. After having lived in the south for many years, we were drawn to southern cuisine. Ultimately, our culinary experiences are articulated strictly from our taste buds. It awakened our genetic memory, and has influenced our moves in the kitchen
